Device reuse, privacy and digital identity
On October 14th we will meet to understand and put into practice a simple idea: a mobile phone or computer that we no longer use can have a second life and be very useful for another person, but this reuse must also protect everyone’s data and privacy.
During the workshop we will work with donated mobile phones and computers . If you have any devices you would like to donate, you can bring them to the workshop. We will review, prepare and repair them together so that they can be reused in social programs, including those linked to the mental health network of the Sant John’s of God Health Park.
We will follow the entire journey of a device: from when someone gives it to us, through the inspection, secure data deletion and reconditioning, until it is ready to be given to a new user.
And we will take advantage of this real case to ask ourselves some questions: how can we prove that the previous owner’s data has been erased? How can we record what has happened to each device? How can we prove that a person can receive it without having to reveal sensitive information about their personal situation or without losing or revealing personal data if they lose it? And how can they access community services in a safe and secure way?
To experiment with these questions, we will introduce concepts and tools and use open source tools such as DeviceHub , to document the device inventory and their preparation for reuse process, and IdHub, to generate verifiable digital identities and credentials. The proposal is to be able to preserve verifiable evidence of the process while sharing only the information that is strictly necessary.
