Global Encryption Day is an annual day of action when advocates, champions, and everyday people come together to celebrate, promote, and defend encryption, a key resource that enables a safe online experience.
Strong encryption is a fundamental part of how we stay safe, private, and connected in an increasingly digital world. It allows people to communicate, share information, manage their finances, access services, and interact online with the confidence that their conversations and data remain protected from tampering, surveillance, or unauthorized access. End-to-end encryption (E2EE) is the gold standard for securing these interactions, helping preserve the trust that underpins modern digital life.
Yet around the world, policies continue to threaten to undermine encryption, often positioning it as a challenge for law enforcement. While concerns about online harm are real, systematically reducing the security and privacy of billions of people is not the solution; it will only put people at further risk. As more of our daily lives move online, strong encryption becomes not only a technical safeguard but a fundamental enabler of safety, trust, and human rights. Protecting encryption means protecting people.
