This event will be a one-day community exhibition hosted at Resilience Action International’s digital skills facility in Kakuma 2 refugee camp, Turkana County, Kenya, and implemented by Digitalanta Limited. The exhibition targets refugee online workers and digital skills students; a growing population of displaced people earning income through online platforms who face acute data vulnerability risks rarely addressed by mainstream digital safety programmes.
Rather than a lecture or workshop, the exhibition will run as a five interactive walk-through stations: (1) a pictorial story wall connecting encryption to lived scenarios e.g (family photo sharing, M-Pesa transfers, location data); (2) a live phone setup table where staff help visitors install encrypted messaging tools directly on their own devices; (3) a case-based display on the real consequences of weak encryption for displaced communities; (4) a policy corner with a Global Encryption Coalition pledge board; and (5) a community voices recording station where consenting participants share their own digital safety experiences.
The purpose is threefold: to drive practical adoption of encrypted tools among refugee online workers, to build genuine understanding of why encryption matters in a displacement context, and to bring the voices of one of the world’s most digitally excluded communities into the Global Encryption Day conversation.
Expected results: 60 participants reached directly; devices set up with encrypted applications at the live station; pledge slips and community voice recordings collected and submitted to the Coalition as advocacy outputs
