Hosted by DIG/SEC INITIATIVE LTD

More information.

As part of Encryption Day 2026, DIG/SEC Initiative will convene human rights defenders, journalists, and activists from across Lango Sub-region for a 3-day forum in Northern Uganda under the theme “Encrypted & Empowered”. The event will focus on securing the data and protecting the people who collect this data. Across Lango sub-region, grassroots defenders are documenting community issues, reporting on governance, and organizing for community empowerment. Unfortunately, they face growing digital threats like phishing, account hacking, surveillance, and misinformation often with no IT support or digital security training.

The purpose of this event is to bring together participants from all districts in Lango sub-region to build practical skills and solidarity around digital security. Through hands-on sessions, mentorship, and open discussion, we will focus on how encryption can be used every day: to secure WhatsApp and Signal chats with sources,
protect emails and documents, back up evidence safely, and prevent unauthorized access to phones and accounts.

Participants will also learn about our DIG/SEC’s SOS Helpline and emergency response support available to HRDs facing digital incidents. The event will create a regional network of “digital safety champions” who can share knowledge in their communities long after the event.

This event is more than a training. It’s a commitment that journalists, activists, and defenders in Northern Uganda should not have to choose between doing their work and staying safe online.

By the end of this Encryption Day 2026 event, we expect:
1. Increased Skills: 15 journalists, activists, and grassroots defenders trained and able to apply basic encryption and digital hygiene to protect themselves and their sources.
2. Secured Practices: Participants leave with at least 2 accounts secured with 2FA, encrypted backups, and safer communication channels.
3. Local Support Network: A Lango Digital Safety Network of 15 “digital safety champions” created and linked to DIG/SEC Mentors for ongoing mentorship.
4. Access to Emergency Support: All participants aware of and able to access DIG/SEC’s SOS Helpline for incident response and recovery.
5. Sustained Impact: Action plans developed to share learning in local communities within 2 months of the event.
