In 2021, India joined the global trend in which state-level legal and policy making decisions resulted in outcomes that threaten end-to-end encryption (“E2EE”), privacy and cybersecurity. Despite significant push back from digital rights organisations, the tally of such national-level legislative and policy making mandates that undermine E2EE continues to increase, not just in India but around the world. This represents a deeply concerning trend for our digital future—as it not only threatens digital rights but also the collective digital future of India and the rest of the world—especially considering the rapid uptick in cyber-attacks that have compromised highly sensitive personal information on a very large scale across the globe.

Through this session, SFLC.in will engage with notable experts to discuss how weakening encryption threatens privacy, security, and digital rights in India and across the world.
